Extends Work in Eugenics, March 30, 1913

The Eugenics Record Office was established at Cold Springs Harbor in Long Island with the stated aim, among other, to "study of the origin of and the best methods of restricting the strains that produce the defective and delinquent classes of the community..."

A Board of Scientific Directors was organized for this board, including such illustrious names as...

Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, Chairman; Dr. William H. Welch, professor of pathology, John Hopkins Hospital, Vice Chairman; Prof. Irving Fisher, Yale University; Prof. Lewellys Barker of Johns Hopkins Hospital; Prof. E. E. Southard of Harvard University and Director of the Psychopathic Hospital, Boston, and Dr. C.B. Davenport, who will be Secretary of the board and resident director."

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Beginning about a century ago or so, there were Better Baby contests that judged the tykes on the basis of physical attributes, etc.

Watts and Sherbon added a hereditarian explanation for human differences to the Better Babies Contests' earlier focus on child development and welfare. Thus completed the transformation of Scientific Baby Contests as a vehicle popularizing eugenics ideas.

You'll find other references, too, in other states.
